Music on the brain by livi cross
Does the music students listen to distract them or help them? The question itself has been tested by many scientists, but the data they received was very untelling. Whether or not music helps you focus, completely depends on who the person listening to the music is.
Music blocks out all of the unwanted background noises, such as sniffing, sneezing, and side conversations, and instead creates a noise that the brain enjoys listening to. Scientist have found that when the sound of music goes through the ears and enters the brain, it triggers the pleasure areas of the brain and thus dopamine is released. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which means dopamine is a chemical that all humans want to have, and never want to lack. Having the brain release dopamine increases the ability to focus and stay on track. Many students listen to music because it does help them focus, and they may not even realize it. But what type of music helps a student focus the most? Research suggest that when one is working on reading or writing, classical music works the best to help them stay focused. This is because classical music does not have lyrics. When one is listening to music with lyrics and reading at the same time, the words from the music and the book/article can get mixed up. However, when doing math problems or drawing, the brain can handle music with lyrics, because there are no other words to focus on.
However, there are students that struggle with lacking attention, where not even music can help block out the distracting noises. Some students just have to work with white noise in the background, which can be sort of challenging to find an area of absolutely no noise in a school building. “Both factors, task complexity and personality, influence your productivity while listening to music” (InformED). However, the final factor depends on who the person is. Everyone has a different way of focusing, so everyone will react in a different way to listening to music as a concentrator. If music helps someone concentrate, by all means put on those headphones! If not, try Mrs. Dehn’s library to focus, but absolute silence is not guaranteed.

allegan county fair by camden kupres
September 7th through the 15th the Allegan County Fair has been kicking it in full swing, offering rides, events, and great food. Allegan County’s yearly fair has reached it’s 166th year and is offering tractor pulls, animals and musical groups such as The Pentatonics.
Marquez Cardona, a student here at Saugatuck, went to the fair with some friends on Tuesday and had so harsh, and not so harsh criticism about the event. “I went on every ride there.” he said, stating that the ride “Top Gun” was among his favorites. He later said in the interview that the fun house was “Fire.”
Besides saying that some of the rides were painful, and that it was too much money to go, he still enjoyed his time at the fair. Others responded a lot more positively saying that the fair was a lot of fun and definitely worth it. Food wise, people have responded positively, mentioning the $2 corn dogs and some pizza they enjoyed there. The Allegan County Fair will be concluding on the 15th, so get your tickets and go enjoy this fun, local event.

what's bopping? by Zee boyce
The music industry has had a successful summer with hits like, “Feels like Summer” by Childish Gambino and, “God is a Woman” by Ariana Grande for just two examples. However, considering the leaves are turning colors, that can only mean one thing: new music for the fall of 2018!
First things first, Hozier dropped his new ep called Nina Cried Power. This officially ends the Irish star’s four-year hiatus after his first full-length album, From Eden, dropped! A hiatus is defined as a period of time where an artist doesn’t produce little to no work for whatever reason. In the first week of the Nina Simone inspired EP’s release, the YouTube releases have already gained 379.2 thousand likes and critics love it! Way to go, Hozier!
Twenty One Pilots just dropped three of their hits from their upcoming album. Trench will feature “Jumpsuit”, “Nicos and Niners”, and “Levitate.” The album will be released on October 5th, 2018. Consequently, the hype has been alive since July with rumors circulating that a 5th song will be released in the month of September to keep up with the band’s current pattern of releases.
Many hiatuses are ending and that is including Carrie Underwood’s as her new album, Cry Pretty, ends her 3 year hiatus from album Storyteller on September 14, 2018. “The Champion,” which features Ludacris, is the first release of anything from the album. However, that was back in March, and Underwood fans are itching to hear the rest of the album as soon as it comes out…..Friday!!
It’s too early to say if 2018 is the year for the ultimate bops due to the next three months not having happened yet, but so far so good. The prospective album rumors seem to beckon an Era of Good Music developing before the human race.
